The Mashacre
The Mashacre was the first project for The Bangers. We put together the mashups in my miniature home studio using the program Acid, the best loop driven multi-track recording program at the time. Our sessions featured Rok pacing around shouting out direction while I nudged lyrics around to hit the flow of the often unsuspecting instrumental.
Our mashups matched our deejay style. While we played some current pop music it was always fused with a deeper cut or in some cases, a track that occupied a catty-corner in the music zeitgeist. A perfect example of this is The Charming Pussy which is an instrumental fashioned out of This Charming Man by The Smiths with the acapella of Khia's My Neck, My Back. The track opens instrumentally as one would expect but when Morissey's voice is supposed ring out about bicycle troubles, Khia starts urging her ladies to start working their kitty. Not everyone appreciated the irony of the unwanted collaboration but it epitomized the sense of humor we brought to a nightclub.
The rest of the cuts on the record are less intimidating and most of them made their way onto our first mixtape, The Bangathon. Armand Van Helden's AV8 records put out the imprint and it was the first time I ever got to see my work on the walls of my favorite record stores. You can see the release on Discogs.
